What is Pop Art?
In simple terms, pop art is a movement that celebrates popular culture. It was born in the 1950s as a response to the increasing commercialism of society and the rise of mass media. Artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein took everyday objects and images and transformed them into works of art, often using bright colors and stark contrasts. Pop art challenged traditional notions of what art was supposed to be, instead celebrating the everyday and commonplace.

Claes Oldenburg, George Segal, and Andy Warhol were some of the avant-garde artists who were included in a group show in June of 1962. The first pop art show in the United States was held at the Green Gallery in New York.
